Academy Round Up

Saturday 15th February 2020: Nottingham Under 18s 11 – Wild Academy Under 18s 4 (U18 North Div 2)

The Widnes Wild Academy Under 18s team had a disappointing trip away to Nottingham Under 18s, losing out 11 – 4 in the Lace City on Saturday.

Widnes actually took the lead on three minutes with a goal from Liam Eaton but Nottingham pulled back to lead 2 – 1 by the end of the first period.

Four unanswered goals for the hosts in the second period gave Nottingham what would turn out to be an unassailable advantage. They scored again just 33 seconds into the third period before Widnes finally scored their second goal of the game in the 48th minute, with a strike from Adam Case – his first goal for the Under 18s team.

A further goal from Nottingham restored the five-goal advantage but just 15 seconds later Wild Captain Sam Anderson pulled a goal back. A goal from Tristan Grimshaw brought the Widnes tally to four but three more goals in the latter stages of the game gave Nottingham a comprehensive victory.

Sam Anderson remains the leading scorer in the Under 18s North Division 2 with 35 goals and 18 assists for the season so far.

The Wild Academy Under 18s are next in action on Saturday 4th April, when they make the short journey to face the Deeside Dragons Under 18s – face off 6.30 p.m.

Saturday 15th February 2020: Billingham Stars 13s 9 – Wild Academy Under 13s 2 (U13 North Div 3)

The Wild Academy Under 13s team lost 9 – 2 away to Billingham Stars Under 13s on Teesside on Saturday.

The Widnes youngsters were out-shot by 58 to 17 over the course of the game and were faced with a very strong and experienced Billingham side, with a numerically stronger bench.

Widnes actually took the lead on eight minutes with a goal from Nathan Wilson. Billingham equalised 90 seconds later and the score remained 1 – 1 at the first period break.

Three unanswered goals in the second period gave the hosts a significant lead but four more goals in the third period put the game well beyond the reach of Widnes by the time they scored their second goal on 38 minutes – once again from Wilson. A final strike from the hosts with five minutes left in the game rounded off the scoring.

The result sees the Wild Under 13s remain in third place in the North Division 3 league table with five games left to play. They are next in action on Sunday 29th March, when they travel away to play Blackburn Under 13s.

The Wild Academy Under 15s are away at Deeside this Saturday 22nd February – 6.30 p.m. face off – and the Under 9s have a cross ice tournament away in Bradford on Sunday.
