Saturday 30th November 2019: Deeside Dragons U15 7 – Widnes Wild Academy U15 6
The Wild Academy Under 15 Team put in a superb performance away to league leaders Deeside Dragons Under 15s on Saturday, eventually losing out 7 – 6 in a game that they very nearly almost won.
The Dragons Under 15s have swept aside all opposition so far this season and won 3 – 8 in Widnes last weekend, so this was always going to be a very tough game for the Wild youngsters. In the event, they were unlucky not to come home with at least a point from the game.
After a very even and closely fought opening, Deeside took the lead in the tenth minute. The score remained 1 – 0 at the first break but the hosts doubled their advantage 40 seconds into the second period.
Widnes upped their game considerably and out-shot the Dragons 11 – 8 during this period but it was the Dragons who scored next in the 20th minute, then added a fourth goal in the 23rd. Widnes eventually found the back of the net themselves on 25 minutes, with a fine strike from Jake Meehan.
With the score standing at 4 – 1 at the second period break, the Dragons looked fully in control but the Wild youngsters’ heads did not drop and they had a storming third period. A power play goal from Benjamin Fox just 50 seconds from the re-start pulled the Wild back into contention and a second strike from him just 24 seconds later narrowed the gap even further. William Calcutt scored his first ever goal for Widnes just 60 seconds after that and levelled the score at 4 – 4. Deeside edged ahead again on 35 minutes but Fox scored his hat-trick goal just 60 seconds later to keep Widnes on level terms.
The Wild youngsters were well and truly on top in this third period and out-shot the Dragons by 19 – 8. They took the lead on 40 minutes, with a second goal of the night from Meehan and continued to push forward. The Dragons didn’t give up, however, and fired in an equalising goal with three and a half minutes left to play.
This was a really tense finish to a thoroughly entertaining game with both teams pushing forward trying to snatch a late winner. Just when it seemed as though the game would finish in a draw, the Dragons fired in a dramatic late winner with just 8 seconds left on the clock and the resulting 7 – 6 win means that they pull further ahead at the top of the league table with 7 wins from their 7 games.
