Saturday 5th October 2019: Wild Academy Under 18s 4 – Deeside Dragons Under 18s 5
The Wild Academy Under 18s team missed out on the chance to notch up their first ever win with a fiercely contested, yet ultimately disappointing, close 4 – 5 defeat at home to local rivals Deeside Dragons Under 18s at Planet Ice Widnes on Saturday.
The visitors started the game much the better side and out-shot the Wild youngsters by 20 – 6 in the first period. They opened the scoring in the fifth minute, doubled the lead on seven minutes and were still leading 0 – 2 at the first break.
The Wild upped their game in the second period and matched the Dragons in terms of possession and shots on goal and were eventually rewarded with two goals of their own. A strike from Ben McLellan on 34 minutes and then a short-handed goal from Team Captain Sam Anderson some 2 minutes later, levelled the score and so it remained at the end of the second period.
The start of the third period saw Deeside edge back into the lead and a fourth goal for them on 50 minutes put them in a commanding position. A power play goal from Sam Anderson on 52 minutes pulled the Wild back into contention but a power play goal with just over 3 minutes left to play edged the visitors further ahead.
The final few minutes were incredibly tense and the outcome of the game was still in question until the very end. Widnes pulled a goal back through Ben McLellan and the Wild removed their Net Minder for the last minute of the game to allow an extra attacker on the ice in the hope of snatching a last-gasp equaliser. However, fortune was not on their side and the game finished 4 – 5 to Deeside.
The Wild Academy Under 18s team are away to Solihull Under 18s this Sunday 13th October – 5.30 p.m. face off. They are away to Nottingham Under 18s the weekend after that and are next at home on Saturday 26th October when they take on Sheffield Under 18s at Planet Ice Widnes.
Saturday 5th October 2019: Wild Academy Under 13s 11 – Blackburn Under 13s 7
The Wild Academy Under 13 team continued their winning start to the season with an 11 – 7 victory at home to Blackburn Under 13s on Saturday at Planet Ice Widnes.
Widnes opened the scoring after just 74 seconds of the game with a goal from Jared Knowles and doubled the advantage just 40 seconds later when Aidan Lamb found the back of the net. Blackburn scored their first goal just a minute later but a second goal from Lamb restored the 2 goal advantage on 4 minutes 30 seconds. Two more goals from Blackburn, including a power play goal with just 4 seconds left to go in the period, levelled the score at 3 – 3 at the first break.
The second period continued in similar vein with Jarred Knowles scoring for the Wild just 50 seconds from the new start and then Blackburn equalising again some 3 minutes later. A purple patch of 4 unanswered goals – from Thomas Warburton, Lamb again, Theo Giorgio and Cai Vernett-Showers handed the Wild an 8 – 4 lead which looked to put them firmly in the driving seat.
However, two more Blackburn goals late in the period kept the game on a knife-edge heading into the final 15 minutes of play. Three more goals from the Wild – a hat-trick goal from Knowles, one from Nicholas Highcock and a fourth strike for Lamb put Widnes in unassailable position and a late goal from Blackburn wasn’t enough to spark a late come-back.
The 11 – 7 victory sees the Wild Under 13s second in the league table, with two wins from their two games to date. Aidan Lamb and Jared Knowles head the league scoring standings with 5 + 6 and 7 + 3 respectively.
The Wild Under 13 team are next in action on Saturday 2nd November when they take on current league leaders Billingham Stars Under 13s at Planet Ice Widnes, face off 7.30pm.
