Saturday 5th October 2019: Altrincham Aces 3 – YKK Widnes Wild 5 (Laidler Division)
The YKK-sponsored Widnes Wild picked up their second win of the new Laidler Division season with a 3 – 5 win away at Altrincham Aces on Saturday.
The Wild had comprehensively beaten the Aces twice in pre-season challenge games but, with different players icing and both teams further along in their respective seasons, this game was a much closer affair. Widnes took the lead after 3 minutes with a goal from Daniel Fay and Mikey Gilbert doubled the advantage 45 seconds later. A goal from Team Captain Danny Bullock on 9 minutes put the Wild 0 – 3 ahead but the Aces eventually managed to fire in their first goal of the game with a short-handed strike from new Latvian import Vlads Vulcanovs in the 14th minute. Bullock scored again with 5 minutes left to go in the period and the Wild were able to take a 1 – 4 lead into the first break.
The second period was a lot closer and it took until the 33rd minute for the Wild to score their fifth goal – a strike from Shaun Dippnall. Altrincham countered almost immediately to pull the score back to 3 – 5 and so it remained at the second period break. A rare goal-less third period followed with both netminders putting in fine performances and the match finished at 3 – 5 to the Wild.
The win sees Widnes move up into 5th place in the Laidler Division Table, with games in hand over all the other teams, as they have recently been concentrating on playing fixtures in the NIHL Midland Cup. They are next in action this Sunday 13th October when they take on Moralee Division Solihull Barons in that competition at Planet Ice Widnes – face off 5.30 p.m.
