The RTL sponsored Widnes Wild face one of their biggest tests of the season so far as they entertain Sheffield Senators in the Laidler Conference this Sunday 22nd January at Silver Blades Widnes.
The Wild saw their title challenge take a knock with a disappointing 6-3 defeat away at north-west neighbours Altrincham Aces last weekend and they now find themselves 6 points behind league leaders Blackburn Eagles. The Sheffield Senators are currently in second place, level on points with the Wild but ahead in the table by virtue of results between the two sides. They also suffered a major blow at the weekend as they were beaten 2-3 at home by the Eagles and, as such, will also have a point to prove on Sunday.
Looking back on Widnes’ defeat at Altrincham, player coach Ollie Barron said:
“I thought we played well – we played hard and for each other and I was happy with all the players’ commitment and effort.”
“I thought Dec Ryan for the Aces had a great game in goal. It was one of those games – on another day, we could have scored a lot more – not forgetting two missed penalty shots. But we can’t be down after the defeat – that’s hockey.”
Looking ahead to the home game against the Senators, Barron said:
“Sunday’s home game is a big game. Sheffield are a good team and we will have to play hard and be up for the battle. We are all looking forward to getting back on home ice in front of our fans.”
The RTL Widnes Wild play Sheffield Senators this Sunday 22nd January at Silver Blades Widnes. The game faces off at 5.30pm and doors open at 4.45.
