Community and Junior Hockey Development

Silver Blades Widnes and the RTL Widnes Wild are delighted to announce the appointment of Mikey Gilbert as the rinks Community Development Officer and Head Coach of the RTL Widnes Wild Junior teams.

Although just 20 years old Mikey has an impressive hockey CV having played for Manchester Storm, Manchester Phoenix, Telford Tigers NiHL and Altrincham Aces as well as coaching junior players for the Trafford Tornados.

Mikey’s role is to deliver community programmes and to support community teams and school groups, working with them closely to provide enjoyable experiences in sport and physical education.  Working closely with colleagues Mikey will look to establish closer links with the local community and to embed national hockey education programme, Hockey Excellence, as part of a pathway for local people of all genders and ages into ice hockey participation.

Mikey said, “I am looking forward to the challenge and especially to introducing new people to ice sports.  I would encourage schools and local community groups to contact me so that I can support them in providing access to healthy lifestyle programmes based around ice sports.”

“I am excited by the chance to help develop the junior hockey programme and developing young players who will go on to play for ice hockey teams such as the Widnes Wild and the Manchester Storm”.
