The YKK-sponsored Widnes Wild have two home games this weekend, taking on Telford Tigers 2 team in the game that was re-scheduled from a couple of weeks ago on Saturday and then facing Hull Jets in a home match for the first time this season on Sunday at Planet Ice Widnes – both games face off at 5.30 p.m.
The Wild are on a bit of a roll at the moment, having won their last five league games in a row and having enjoyed consecutive four-point weekends. Widnes have beaten the Tigers 2 team twice this season with a 9 – 1 victory at home back in November and then a 2 – 5 win away in Shropshire in December. Another four-point weekend would go a long way to ensuring their continued climb up the Laidler Division table and a place in the end of season play offs.
The Tigers 2 sit second bottom of the Laidler Division table at present and are not as strong a team as they have been in previous seasons. However, they do have former Wild import Filip Supa on their roster and he is their top scorer for the season – and matches against Telford are rarely dull.
The Hull Jets are currently league leaders and they boast Laidler Division top scorer Richard Haggar. In the first meeting between the two teams, the Wild slumped to a 12 – 0 drubbing away on Humberside on 1st February. However, when the two teams met again in Hull last Sunday, it was a different story altogether and the Wild won the match on a penalty shoot-out.
The two teams have been involved in some memorable clashes in recent seasons – most notably the 2018 play off semi final which Widnes also won on a penalty shoot-out – and, with two home games coming up against the Jets in the next couple of weeks, Widnes have the chance to finish the season on a high note.
For this special “double header” weekend, special tickets are on sale at the rink – priced at £14.00 for adults and £8.00 for children covering both matches. This represents a saving of £2.00 on both adult and children tickets if they were bought separately for each game. These “double header” tickets are only available from the rink box office – and cannot be booked online. They can be purchased in advance or on the door at the Telford game on the Saturday.
The Wild Academy Under 9s team are playing in a multi-team “cross-ice” tournament away at Deeside on Saturday.
