The Widnes Wild Academy Under 15 team picked up their first ever competitive win with a sensational 4-3 victory at home to the Blackburn Under 15 team at Planet Ice Widnes on Saturday.
This is a huge achievement for the fledgling U15 team as it is their first season of league ice hockey and they are regularly coming up against teams full of players who have already been playing together for some 6 or 7 years. The two previous meetings between these teams saw Blackburn winning by 11-2 and 11-4 so the progress that has been made by the Wild players in a very short time is clear for all to see.
Blackburn took the lead after just 50 seconds of the game but the Wild equalised with a goal on 12 minutes from Adam Case. The Wild were noticeably on top during this first period – out-shooting the visitors 9 to 4 – but they fell behind again to a goal in the last minute of the period and trailed 1-2 at the first break.
Widnes drew level again with a goal from Luke Mullarkey on 20 minutes but Blackburn edged ahead once more with a goal 5 minutes later to lead 2-3 after two periods. The third period was very tense and closely played – with only three shots on goal being registered at either end. Widnes equalised for the third time on 33 minutes with Adam Case’s second goal of the game and then they finally took the lead 3 minutes later with a goal from team captain Jack Davies. That rounded off the scoring for the game and the Wild Academy side were able to celebrate their first ever league win.
Full Wild U15 Line-Up: Callum Thompson – NM, Cody Ogden, Tristan Lewis, Adam Vigh-Yecsey, Luke Mullarkey, Alain Barthelemy, Finlay Wood, Adam Case, Jack Davies – C, Ellis Mahar, Jake Meehan – AC, Jamie Lee Houghton, Ricards Konons, Rory Sillery – AC, Dylan Jones, Reid Ryan

This season is the first that the Widnes Wild Academy have entered the competitive EIHA leagues and have teams at Under 9 and Under 13 and Under 15 level. Planet Ice Widnes has a very well-organised and structured “learn to play ice hockey” scheme in place and are always keen to attract new players of all age groups – boys and girls.
