The Wild will travel to Sheffield for their third competitive fixture as they seek a win on the road.
Sheffield Senators will be coming into this game with the exact same mindset of Wild, to get their first win of the season. The fixture list threw out an unkind start of the season to Sheffield with away trips to Title chasers Coventry (7-2) and Solihull (12-0), with a tough trip to Hull (8-5) also included.
Whilst not many teams will go to Deeside and put 7 goals past the league leaders, Wild have shipped their fair share of goals from errors in defence and that is now key for head coach Mark Gillingham if they’re to take a win from Sheffield;
“Sheffield have got off to a slow start, but they obviously can’t be underestimated. I know that they’ve lost a few players from the team that was so good throughout last season, but when you look at the games they’ve played, they’ve been away from home for every fixture, and there’s probably only the Hull game where they might have been expected to pick up some points.
‘The Senators will view the game with us as a great opportunity to pick up their first points of the season, and if we overlook the challenge, there’s a good chance that they’ll manage that. It’s up to us to make sure they don’t. The biggest mistake we could make would be to look at their results and try and judge them based on that. At the end of the day, they’re still part of arguably the strongest club in the north, so there’s going to be quality in the team.
‘We’re fairly confident that we’ll be able to score goals, so we’ve been working primarily on defence since the last Deeside game. Hopefully, we’ll start conceding fewer goals, and that will mean we start to pick up points sooner rather than later.”
Fans heading to Sheffield for the clash will be able to see 18-year-old Tom Ratcliffe in action for the first time since joining the Wild in August, having served his 2-match ban.
