Two Games, One Point

A massive double header weekend faces the Widnes Wild this weekend as just one point from either game will see them secure 2nd place in Laidler Conference. A remarkable season has seen a consistent Wild team lose just 5 games out of 25 leaving the Halton side requiring just a draw out of their remaining 3 games to give themselves an opportunity for promotion.

On Saturday the Wild travel down the M6 to face the Coventry Blaze at the Skydome, Coventry. So far this season the Blaze have struggled to trouble the Wild but coach Mckenzie will not be taking them lightly;CP 47

‘The Blaze are a tricky side to play against. They have good size, play hard and will defend with their hearts. They have a very young side but that should never be underestimated. We will go into that game on Saturday as if it is a playoff game as we really need that mentality until the end of the season.’

In three previous encounters with the Blaze, Wild have prevailed winners only conceding a total of four goals. They will look to continue in that fashion on Saturday in their quest to collect two valuable points.

Sunday night will see the Wild return home to welcome the Hull Jets to the Hive. The Jets have had a somewhat turbulent season but again are a team that cannot be taken lightly. They have a very offensive threat alongside good defence and goalkeeping. A team with nothing to lose can provide a test for a team with everything to lose.SC 91

Coach Mckenzie believes his side is more than capable of a 4-point weekend;

‘All season we have beaten the teams we had to. Our consistency has been great and I really hope to continue in that fashion this weekend. Hull are a team that defend really well then counter attack. If you play loose and don’t manage the puck well, they can cause you real problems. I am really looking for two solid displays from our guys this weekend, take our chances when they come, defend well and we should be ok.’

Sunday’s home game will face-off at 17:30 with doors opening at 16:45. Tickets are available on the door at the price of Adults £6 and Children £3. For any further information you can call box office on 0151 420 7930 or alternatively email scott.mckenzie@widneswild.co.uk.
