The RTL-sponsored Widnes Wild have two road trips over the weekend – playing the Deeside Dragons N2 team in North Wales on Saturday (5.45pm face off) and the Telford Tigers in Shropshire on Sunday (6pm).
The Dragons development team have only won two games all season – both against the similarly struggling Blackburn Hawks N2 team – and the Wild have beaten them three times this season already – scoring a massive 53 goals and conceding just 9. Assuming that the game is on and that all the regular personnel are able to attend, it would take a very wide stretch of the imagination to envisage anything other than a Widnes win on Saturday. However, the Dragons team play with a lot of pride and passion – as was seen in their recent 20-1 defeat at Widnes where they carried on battling right to the last second – so it should be an entertaining match.
Sunday’s game is a different matter entirely and is bound to be a close run affair. Telford lead Widnes by two points in the Laidler Division table and play off positions are at stake. The Wild beat the Tigers twice at home earlier in the season but the last encounter in Telford saw them surrender a 0-3 lead to end up losing 6-3 in a niggly game.
Widnes have two games in hand over the Tigers and just three points separate the teams in 2nd to 5th place in the league table. There are only 4 places available in the play offs and, with most of the top teams still to play each other in the last few weeks of the season, there is still plenty to play for.
Following this weekend’s games, the RTL-sponsored Widnes Wild will be at home next Sunday 11th March when they face Hull Jets in another huge top 4 encounter at Planet Ice Widnes. Face off is at 5.30pm and doors open at 4.45.
