The YKK sponsored Widnes Wild have the chance to make history this Sunday 17th March when they take on local rivals Altrincham Aces at Planet Ice Widnes.
The Wild lead the Laidler Division table and only need more 1 point to secure their first ever league championship title. They currently have 50 points but could, theoretically, still be overtaken by second placed team Telford Tigers if results were to go a particular way in the remaining games of the season.
A straight win in regular time would give the Wild the points they need to clinch the first league title in their 6 year history and even an overtime loss would be sufficient as that yields one point to the loser, by virtue of being level after 60 minutes play.
Games between Widnes and Altrincham are always feisty and hard fought affairs due to the close proximity between the teams and regular interchange of players over the years. The Aces have had a poor season by their own standards and are second from bottom of the league table with just 9 wins from 27 games. Widnes have won all three meetings between the two local rivals this season but form and league position count for nothing in derby games and anything could happen on Sunday.
The YKK sponsored Widnes Wild entertain the Altrincham Aces this Sunday at Planet ice Widnes. Face off is at 5.30pm and doors open at 4.45.
The day before, on Saturday 16th March, the Wild Academy Under 13 team are in action when they entertain the Grimsby Under 13 team at Planet Ice Widnes.
The Academy team have made huge progress in their first season of competitive ice hockey and will be hoping to chalk up their 3rd win of the season against a Grimsby side who they beat 6-5 in their last meeting back in February.
Face off time on Saturday is 6.50pm and admission is free.
