The Widnes Wild women’s team continue their challenge for the WNIHL Division 1 North title with a home game against the Grimsby Wolves this Sunday 16th February at Planet Ice Widnes – 5.30 p.m. face off.
The Wild Women beat Grimsby 5 – 8 in the first ever meeting between these two teams in Lincolnshire, back in early January. The Wolves sit second bottom of the league table with just one win from their five games to date but, with only six teams in the division and the destination of the league title being decided over just ten competitive matches, every game is crucial and the Wolves will present a significant challenge for the Wild Women.
With the Wild Women’s last league game being some six weeks ago, some of the players have been turning out for other teams in order to gain extra ice time and maintain their match sharpness. Team Captain Emma Pearson has made five appearances for the Blackburn Hawks 2 team in the Men’s Laidler Division and picked up an assist in her most recent game for them, while Katie Fairclough and Sav Sumner have both been playing up a division for the Whitley Bay Squaws in the Women’s Premier League.
The Wild Women are currently second in the Division 1 North league table, two points behind leaders Solway Sharks Ladies and two ahead of third place Telford Wrekin Raiders. They have a game in hand over Solway but Telford have played fewer games than any of the other teams in the league at present. The Sharks take on the Raiders in Dumfries on Saturday and the result of that game will have a huge impact on the destination of this season’s league title.
With the Wild men’s team without a fixture and the Wild Academy Under 15s game against Solihull having been rescheduled, the Wild Women’s game on Sunday is the only competitive game at Planet Ice Widnes this weekend. The game faces off at 5.30 p.m., with doors opening at 5 o’clock.
The Wild Academy Under 18s team are away to Nottingham this Saturday 15th February – face off 5.30 p.m. The Under 13s are away at Billingham on the same day – also 5.30 p.m. face off.
The Wild Academy Under 11s team are away to Kingston Under 11s in Hull on Sunday – 12.45 face off (noon).
The Wild Academy Under 15s home match against Solihull that had been scheduled for this Saturday 15th February has now been rearranged and will be played on Sunday, 24th May at Planet Ice Widnes – face off 4.15 p.m.
The YKK sponsored Widnes Wild are without a game this coming weekend and are next in Laidler Division action the following weekend with back-to-back matches against erstwhile league leaders and serious title contenders Bradford Bulldogs.
They travel to face the Bulldogs in West Yorkshire on Saturday 22nd February – 4.45 p.m. face off – and are then at home to Bradford the following night at Planet Ice in Widnes – 5.30 p.m. face off.
