The YKK-sponsored Widnes Wild have two away games this weekend – taking on the Blackburn Hawks 2 team in East Lancashire on Saturday, 5.45 p.m. face off – and then travelling to face league leaders Hull Jets on Sunday, 5.15 p.m. face off.
The Hawks 2 have been a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde team this season in their games with the Wild, putting up very strong opposition and keeping them to a very tense and narrow 4 – 2 victory in Widnes over the Christmas period but then succumbing to a record-breaking 0 – 23 defeat in the first away game at Blackburn in January.
The Hawks 2 are a development team with the aim of giving ice time and experience to young players and, as such, are not necessarily in the hunt for trophies. However, ice hockey matches still have to be won and, while Saturday’s game on paper looks the easier of the two fixtures, it is a potential banana skin that the Wild will be keen to negotiate successfully.
The trip to Humberside on Sunday will be a tough one for the Wild. Hull Jets sit top of the Laidler Division table with 19 wins from 22 games so far. They are the league’s top scorers with 166 goals and have the meanest defence, having conceded just 56 goals. The Wild have only met Hull once this season so far – away on 1st February – and that game ended in a 12 -0 shut out for the Jets.
Because of a re-arranged fixture date, Widnes have to play Hull three times during March and those matches will have a big impact on the final League placings in the Laidler Division.
The Wild Academy Under 11s team are home on Saturday, 29th February, when they take on Bradford Under 11s again at Planet Ice, Widnes. Face off is at 6.15pm and admission is free.
The YKK sponsored Widnes Wild are next at home the following weekend, when, unusually they have a home game on the Saturday as well as the Sunday. On Saturday 7th March they will take on the Telford Tigers 2 team in the game that was re-scheduled a couple of weeks ago due to travel concerns caused by the storms. On Sunday, they will host Hull Jets for the first time at Planet Ice Widnes this season. Both games will face off at 5.30 p.m.
For this “double header” weekend, special tickets are on sale – priced at £14.00 for adults and £8.00 for children covering both matches. This represents a saving of £2.00 on both adult and children tickets if they were bought separately for each game.
Please note that these “double header” tickets are only available from the rink box office – and cannot be booked online. They can be purchased in advance or on the door at the Telford game on the Saturday.
