Weekend Preview: 9th & 10th March

The Wild women’s team take on the Milton Keynes Falcons this Sunday at Planet Ice Widnes – 5.30pm face off.

The YKK sponsored Widnes Wild have a well–earned weekend off to recharge their batteries in preparation for the dramatic finale of this season’s Laidler Division title race, so the spotlight falls well and truly on the Wild women’s team who take on the Milton Keynes Falcons at Planet Ice Widnes this Sunday 10th March – 5.30pm face off.

The Wild women return to Women’s Premier League action this weekend after a 7-7 draw away to the Solway Sharks ladies team last Sunday in a challenge match that was arranged to give the inexperienced team extra ice time as they boldly negotiate a season of transition and new player development.

Widnes lost 10-3 away to Milton Keynes in the first game of the season but that game saw competitive debuts for 5 or more Wild players and they have made great progress as a team since then. The Falcons have only won 2 games all season and have lost their last three, so anything could happen in Sunday’s game.

The player to watch on the MK bench is their Canadian born captain Rachel Piotrowski who has scored 10+3 in 5 games this season. The Wild’s top scorer so far is Sav Sumner with 4+2 in 7 games, with player coach Amanda Williams close behind on 3+2.

Looking ahead to the game on Sunday, Williams said:

“The extra game for us last weekend at Solway was a really valuable exercise with emphasis given to further developing our newer players by encouraging them to have more time on the puck and build their confidence. They accepted the challenge and we were rewarded with first ever goals for Charlotte McPhee (2), Josie Moran and Katie Adshead. Philippa Wheeler’s goal was also her first for the Wild.”

“The mood is positive going into our league game versus MK this weekend. Leen (de Decker – assistant coach) and I are looking forward to seeing what the team can bring, as we look to fight to retain our spot in the Premier league.”

The day before – on Saturday 9th March – the Wild Academy Under 13 team take on Nottingham U13s at Planet Ice Widnes – 6.50pm face off.

Nottingham are the league leaders with 9 wins from their 10 games so far this season and they arrive on the back of a 6-game winning run.

The Wild have played Nottingham three times this season and have been beaten on each occasion but, as this is Widnes’ first ever season of competitive junior hockey, their two wins from 10 starts is not a bad haul and the team are progressing with every game they play.

The Wild’s leading goal scorer in this debut season so far is Cody Ogden with 13 goals and 1 assist from 7 games – and he has also played 5 games for the Wild U15 team as well, scoring 1 +2. Adam Vigh-Yecsey joins Cody on 14 points for the season so far, having scored 10+4 and Nicholas Highcock is chief playmaker with 9 assists.

This team is packed with enthusiastic youngsters who are the Widnes Wild NIHL players of tomorrow and so deserve everybody’s full support. The game on Saturday faces off at 6.50pm and admission is free.
