Saturday 21st September: Sheffield Senators v YKK Widnes Wild (Laidler Division)
Sunday 22nd September: YKK Widnes Wild v Nottingham Lions (NIHL Midland Cup)
The YKK-sponsored Widnes Wild face a tough test this weekend with a trip away to Sheffield Senators on Saturday (face off 3.30pm) before facing the Moralee Division Nottingham Lions at home at Planet Ice Widnes on Sunday.
The Wild lost their opening match of the new Laidler Division season at home to the Senators two weeks ago in a very closely-fought game that had to be decided by penalty shots, so they will be very keen to get their own back on Saturday.
The game will also see an early return to his previous club for Jamaican International player Solomon Smith who just switched to the Wild at the start of the season. Sheffield are sitting in a mid-table position at this early stage of the season, having won two of their three League games.
On Sunday, the Wild entertain the Nottingham Lions in the NIHL Midland Cup. The Lions have been the “whipping boys” in the Moralee Division since they took the bold step in stepping up a league but such is the strength in depth of Nottingham hockey in general, they will still represent a very tough prospect.
Wild Alternate Captain Lee Kemp used to play for the Lions and will be pitched up against some of his former team-mates on Sunday. The game faces off at 5.30 p.m. and doors open at 4.45 p.m.
The Wild Academy Under 18s team play their second home game of the season this Saturday, when they entertain Sutton Under 18s at Planet Ice Widnes. Both teams have yet to win a game this season, so something will have to give on Saturday.
The Wild U18s are in their first season of competitive hockey and are coming up against teams who have been playing together for a number of years. They are improving with each game they play and Saturday’s game against Sutton is a game not to miss.
Face off is at 7.45pm and admission is free.
The Wild Academy Under 9s team are also in action on Saturday, when they travel to Deeside to take part in a Multi-Team Cross Ice Tournament.
