Saturday 7th March: YKK Widnes Wild 7 – Telford Tigers II 2 (NIHL Laidler Division)
The YKK sponsored Widnes Wild picked up an excellent 7-2 home win on Saturday evening in an exciting and fast paced encounter with the Telford Tigers 2 team at Planet Ice Widnes.
Shaun Dippnall scored a hat trick to help maintain the Wild’s great run of form in recent matches.
In a fast paced and even first period, the Telford Tigers opened the scoring through former Wild import Filip Supa, after some sustained pressure in the attacking zone. The Wild bounced back in immediate fashion with a power play goal from Shaun Dippnall, his first of the night.
Zack Brown in the Telford goal was now the busier of the two net minders and just over 2 minutes later, the Wild scored another power play goal courtesy of Bez Hughes, after a tripping call on Telford’s Connor Gordon, to take the lead for the first time in the match.
The match opened up early in the 2nd period, with both teams having good chances. The Wild moved the puck well through the neutral zone and Brown in the Telford net had to make a number of good saves. Slightly against the run of play, the Tigers tied the game midway through the period, with a goal scored off the rebound by Jordan Jolly.
Widnes immediately started to apply pressure again, however, and two quick-fire goals shortly followed, from Charlie Ratcliffe and Daniel Haid, to give the Wild a 4-2 advantage.
They continued to have good puck possession in the 3rd period and a fantastic short-handed goal from Mike Mawer gave the Widnes a comfortable advantage after an excellent penalty kill.
Two more powerplay goals followed from Shaun Dippnall to complete his hat trick and cap off a hard fought and well deserved win for the Wild.
The MVP Awards were presented by representatives from the Wild’s main sponsor YKK and went to Stephen Crowe for Telford and Ken Armstrong for Widnes.
