Wild Academy Teams Show Great Progress Against Dragons U15 and U13s

The Widnes Wild Academy Under 15 team continued their first ever season of league hockey with a promising performance against local rivals Deeside Dragons at Planet Ice Widnes on Saturday night.

While the final scoreline of 3-19 may suggest one story, when compared with the 22-2 away result against the same team just 6 weeks ago, it shows that the fledgling Academy team is making progress as time goes by.

While everybody on the ice played well, it is worth noting that Callum Thompson scored a well-deserved hat trick for the Wild and netminder Jamie Lee Houghton turned away 70 of the 89 shots that he faced over the 45 minutes.

The other teams in this league have lots of players with several years of experience under their belts already so this season was always going to be a steep learning curve for the Wild youngsters, but it is the best way to learn and the team will grow stronger as they progress through the season.

The Wild Academy Under 15s are next in action on Saturday 8th December when they play the Blackburn Under 15 team at Planet Ice Widnes – 6.50pm face off.

The Widnes Wild Academy Under 13 team put in a superb performance against local rivals Deeside, narrowly losing out 3-4 at Planet Ice Widnes on Sunday.

Match Report by Liam Knowles:

Widnes Wild Under 13’s faced Deeside Dragons on Sunday 18th. This was the second time the teams have met this season after the opening fixture of the season took the Wild to Deeside.

The Wild made the first run at goal, winning the first face off and heading straight to the net. A great save was made by the Dragons net minder, and play quickly moved to the Wild’s defensive zone.

Throughout the first 5 minutes of the game the Dragons applied pressure on the Wild net, with some great play from their D-men, keeping the puck in the wild zone and continuing to put shots on the goal. The Wild net minder Robert Ziraks (10) showed he was up to the job, pulling of several stunning saves to keep the score at 0-0. At 7:04 the Wild finally broke the deadlock when Adam Vigh-Yecsey (29) put a shot on goal that slid under the Dragons netminders leg pad and crossed the goal line. It was the Wild who kept the pressure up and at 13:13 Aiden Lamb (11) scored his first of the game.

The second period of the game saw the Wild’s penalty killers in action when Tristan Lewis (28) took a two minute penalty for slashing. The Wild once again showed that they can work hard and killed of the penalty. Unfortunately for Wild the second period also saw them concede, giving the Dragons a renewed energy. Shortly after the Dragons goal, the Wild went on the power play for the first time following a hooking penalty. The Dragons killed the penalty, keeping the Wild pinned back for most of the two minutes.

The first action of the third period saw Aidan Lamb (11) put the puck in the net again to score his second and the Wild’s third of the game. Tristan Lewis (28) returned to the penalty box 34 minutes in, after being assessed a penalty for tripping. Again the Wild kept the Dragons at bay, killing the penalty despite Robert Ziraks(10) being put under more pressure.

Just thirty seconds after killing the penalty, the Wild defence gave, seeing the Dragons number 27 bring them within one goal of the home team. The Dragons kept up the pressure on a tiring Wild team, scoring again just one minute later, making the score 3-3 and setting up a tense final seven minutes. With just ninety seconds left to play, the Dragons number 8 broke the deadlock, putting the away team 3-4 ahead. Despite their best efforts the Wild weren’t able to equalise and the game finished with the Dragons winning 4-3.

Team line-up: Robert Ziraks (NM), Austin Busby, Aidan Lamb (C), Morgan Busby, Alexandra Vigh-Yecsey, Jared Knowles, Margaret Coffey, Cody Ogden, Tristan Lewis (A), Adam Vigh-Yecsey, Samual Daintith, Nick Highcock (A), Cai Vernett-Showers,
