Widnes Wild Under 13’s highly anticipated first home fixture took place on Saturday 10th, with a 18:50 face off. The teams observed a minute silence to honour the fallen soldiers before the puck was dropped for the first period.
The Wild made a strong start to the game, winning the first face off and quickly applying pressure on the Hawks net. With 1:09 played, Aidan Lamb (11), delivered the puck to the stick of Jared Knowles (19) in front of goal. Jared lifted the puck over the Hawks goalies right shoulder to open the scoring for the game.
The rest of the first period was hard fought by both teams, with all the scoring coming from the hawks despite many great saves from the Wild netminder Robert Ziraks (10). At the end of the period the Hawks led with 6 goals to the Wild’s 1.
The second period saw the Hawks come out strong, scoring 5 goals unanswered, including 1 on the powerplay whilst Adam Vigh-Yecsey (29) sat a minor penalty for tripping . The Wild kept battling and at 24:29 Jared Knowles returned the favour to Aiden Lamb- serving the puck in front of goal for Aiden to finish.
The Hawks were able to score 1 more before the end of the second, finishing the period with a 12- 2 lead.
The third period was always going to be tough for the Wild, who iced with a short bench for the fixture. The Hawks scored 2 goals in the first minute of puck drop, invoking the newly introduced “mercy rule” meaning no more goals were recorded.
Throughout the remaining time the Wild showed their grit and determination, skating hard and competing until the final buzzer. The team again showing that they will not give up on a game and will work hard to create offensive opportunities, regardless of the scoreline.
