The Widnes Wild Academy Under 13 team came back from Blackburn empty handed after suffering a 12-0 defeat in their penultimate game of the season on Sunday.
Blackburn are top of the Under 13 league table with 14 wins from their 16 games – three of them so far coming against the Wild Academy – so a loss for the Widnes team, who are playing their first season of competitive ice hockey, wasn’t completely unexpected.
The game was actually very close for much of the first period with Blackburn not scoring their opening goal until the 12th minute. A second strike just 30 seconds later handed the hosts a 2-0 lead at the first period break and then in the second period they hit seven more unanswered goals to put the game way beyond the reach of Widnes.
Three more goals in the third period rounded off the scoring but the Wild youngsters battled throughout and showed great spirit right up until the final buzzer.
The Academy Under 13 team have their last game of the season away to Nottingham on Saturday 25th May.
