The Widnes Wild Academy Under 15 team rounded off their first ever season of league competition with a 12-2 defeat away at local rivals Deeside on Saturday.

They finish the season bottom of the 4-team league table but with two wins to their credit – both coming against Blackburn with whom they finish level on points.

Having lost 22-2 to the Dragons U15 team in their first ever meeting back in October and then 15-3 and 15-5 since then, “only” conceding 12 goals this time could certainly be looked upon as an improvement and shows how much the team has developed as a group over that time.

The Dragons were already 6 goals up by the time that Wild captain Jack Davies found the back of the net in the 20th minute and, by the time Adam Case scored the final goal of the game on 42 minutes, Deeside had scored 6 more.

Jack Davies finishes the season as the Wild’s top points scorer having played in all 12 league games and scoring 5 goals and 6 assists for a total of 11 points. Adam Case is actually the top goal scorer with 7+1 in 7 games and Luke Mullarkey is third in the scoring standings with 5+3 from 12 games.

The Wild U9 team travelled to Billingham on Saturday for a 4-team “Cross Ice” tournament which also featured teams from Sheffield and Manchester Storm.

The U9s are away in Altrincham this Sunday 5th May for a 5-team tournament featuring Telford, Deeside, Blackburn and Manchester and they then round off their debut season by hosting a 5-team tournament at Planet Ice Widnes the week after on Sunday 12th May – 4.20pm start time.

The Wild Academy Under 13 team are also in action next Sunday 5th May when they travel to Blackburn for their penultimate game of the season. Face off is at 4.45pm.

This season is the first that the Widnes Wild Academy have entered the competitive EIHA leagues and have teams at Under 9 and Under 13 and Under 15 level.

Planet Ice Widnes has a very well-organised and structured “learn to play ice hockey” scheme in place and are always keen to attract new players of all age groups – boys and girls.

Anybody interested in joining the Wild Academy should contact the rink on 0151 420 7930 and speak to the Junior Development Officer and Academy Manager Mikey Gilbert.
