The Widnes Wild women’s team’s away game with Chelmsford Cobras this Sunday 21st April has been cancelled and the points awarded to Chelmsford.
The game had originally been scheduled to be played in Chelmsford with a lunchtime face-off but, with the Riverside rink currently closed for refurbishments, all the various Chelmsford teams’ remaining games have been moved to other venues at different times.
The Wild women’s game was moved to Lee Valley ice rink in East London with a 6.30pm face off time and the later finishing time and journey home meant that several players ands coaches would not be able to make the journey.
Commenting on the decision to forfeit the game, Wild women’s player coach Amanda Williams said:
“We were always going to be short-benched for a game scheduled for Easter weekend, but several of our players selflessly rearranged their plans around the midday face off in Chelmsford to ensure that we could raise the minimum number of players to play the fixture.”
“Due to the refurbishment of Chelmsford ice rink, the game was recently moved to an evening face off out of Lee Valley on the same Sunday. Unfortunately, the later face off time meant that a number of players with prior commitments had to drop out and also left us with no Level 2 coach available. We are disappointed to lose out on the game time, as we always have good, competitive matches against the Cobras.”
The game has been awarded as a 5-0 win to Chelmsford and Widnes may receive a fine and points deduction for failing to fulfil the fixture.
The Wild women’s next game is on Sunday 28th April when they entertain Kingston Diamonds at Planet Ice Widnes. The face-off time for that game is slightly later than usual – at 6pm instead of the normal 5.30.
