The Widnes Wild Women’s team saw their Division 1 North title hopes given a huge boost over the weekend, without even having to set foot on the ice.
In what has been an exciting three-way race for the top spot, third place Solway Sharks Ladies beat second place Telford Wrekin Raiders 4 – 5 down in Shropshire on Sunday, which effectively means that the league leading Wild Women can secure the title outright on points if they win their final two games of the season, rather than having to rely on other teams’ results or goal difference.
Having said that, their next game is away to Solway this Saturday 14th March and will, therefore, be a very stern test.
Widnes have had some very entertaining and high-scoring games against the Sharks this season – winning a pre-season friendly game 6 – 10 back in August and drawing 8 – 8 in the return in September. The only ever competitive game between the two teams saw the Wild women beat Solway 9 – 5 in Widnes back in December in a game that could very easily have gone either way.
Following the trip to Dumfries on Saturday, the Wild Women have another away game to round off their regular season schedule when they travel to face Nottingham Vipers on 18th April.
