Academy U13s Take The Points After Dragons are Slayed by Rulebook.

The Widnes Wild Academy Under 13s team came away with the points from their league game away at Deeside on Saturday after the Dragons U13s were not able to muster enough players for the clash to count as a league fixture.

It was the U13 team’s first ever competitive game and was still quite a test as they came up against players who had already been playing competitive junior hockey together for the Dragons for several seasons.

The fledgling Wild team actually lost 23-2, however, league rules state that each team must have 11 players on their bench for the game to be recognised as a league match and, as the Dragons team only had 7 players plus one netminder, this was a breach of regulations. Because of this, the league game was forfeited and the Wild handed a 0-5 win and two league points – and the game was considered as a challenge game instead.

For the record – here is the detailed match report, courtesy  of Liam Knowles:

Widnes Wild Under 13’s made a trip across the Mersey gateway, and into Wales to face their first ever opponents in the Deeside Dragons. This was a highly anticipated fixture by the team, particularly as, for many it was their first time playing a competitive match.

Despite the Wild gaining possession from the first face-off, and starting the game with pressure on the Dragons net, it was Deeside who scored the first goal. Taking the lead a little after 2 minutes.

The Wild continued to battle hard, conceding a penalty as Alexandra Vigh-Yecsey(17) took the first penalty minutes- 2 minutes for tripping.

Deeside were able to build pressure on the power play with netminder Harry Bird being having plenty to do. The Wild defense held strong but, with 30 seconds left to kill, the Dragons found the net taking a 2-0 lead.

The first period continued with most of the scoring coming from the Deeside Dragons, until the final minute. With Wild on a power play following an interference penalty against the Dragons, Jared Knowles (19) was able to find the net after Aiden Lamb (11) crashed the net and the rebound was picked up.

The second period saw more pressure on the Wild net. Despite some scoring chances being created by the Wild, the Dragons goalkeeper was able to keep them out for the whole of the period.

The halfway point of the second period saw Robert Ziraks (10) fill the Wild net. With lots of work to do, he showed his ability, making plenty of double saves after Deeside picked up rebounds.

Aiden Lamb (11), the Wild captain, was unfortunate to take a tripping penalty halfway through the period. Again the Wild worked hard to kill the penalty, keeping the puck out of the net for 60 of the 120 seconds. At 8:51 into the second the Wilds penalty killing ability was tested again as Adam Vigh-Yecsey (29) took a 2-minute penalty for slashing.

The Wild started the third period with strength, seeing Adam Vigh-Yecsey (29) score the teams first even-handed goal with a great piece of solo play. Despite conceding more than they scored, the Wild showed great spirit in the third period, making many good plays and testing the Dragons netminder.

Through the entire fixture, the Wild team showed their ability to keep playing hard and working as a team, despite the game not going in their favor.

The game ended 23-2 in favor of the home team with penalty minutes at 4-6. However, as Deeside Dragons had iced players who were ineligible for the fixture, the Wild picked up their first points of the season.
