Academy Weekend Round Up

Saturday 8th January – Wild Academy Under 18s 10 – Leeds Under 18s 1

The Wild Academy Under 18s team got the new year off to a great start with a 10-1 challenge game win over the Leeds Under 18 team at Planet Ice Widnes on Saturday.

Leeds do not have a league team at Under 18 level yet so this was a good opportunity for their players in that age group to have a try-out together and it was a good work too for the Wild youngsters who otherwise would have 6 weeks without a game before their next league fixture later this month.

Widnes opened the scoring on 5 minutes with a goal from Luke Mullarkey and the same player doubled the lead just 60 seconds later. Further goals from Adam Case and Robert Georgescu meant that Widnes led 4-0 at the first period break.

Two more Widnes goals followed in the second period – from Case and Jake Meehan – and the Wild Academy looked well on top.

The third period had yet more goals with 4 for Widnes – from Ben McLellan (2), a hat-trick goal for Case and a fine strike by Rory Sillery – and a late consolation for Leeds which deprived Wild netminder Calam Barber of what would have been a well earned shut-out.

Saturday 8th January – Wild Academy Under 14s 9 – Sheffield Under 14s 2

The Wild Academy Under 14 team moved up to second in the league table with a 9-2 win over Sheffield Under 14s at Planet Ice Widnes on Saturday.

Widnes took the lead with a Jared Knowles goal on 3 minutes, Sheffield equalised on 10 minutes but further strikes from Reece O’Brien and Lewis Speare saw the Wild leading 3-1 at the end of the first period.

The second period saw just one goal – from Evan Walker, one of several U12 players who was playing up a level for this game. Sheffield scored first in the third period but Walker scored again and this was followed by a three from Knowles and a hat-trick strike from Walker to hand Widnes an important victory over the Steel City team.

The Wild Academy Under 14 team are now level on points with league leaders Leeds U14s, although they have played more games.

The Under 14s are next in action away to Manchester Storm this Saturday 15th January, face off 4.20pm. The same day the Under 16s are away to Nottingham, 5pm face off.
