The YKK sponsored Widnes Wild are pleased to announce the return of Berwyn “Bez” Hughes for the forthcoming 2021/22 season.
The utility player was an important part of the recent NIHL Division 1 National Championship winning team and also squads for both the Northern Cup and Three Rivers Cup series, where he was an ever present in all 16 games.
The 26 year old played his junior hockey at Deeside and Altrincham before switching to Telford where he played 28 NIHL North 1 games with the Titans team over the 2012/13 and 13/14 seasons.
Hughes first joined Widnes for the 2014/15 season and then spent a year gaining experience in the USA in 2015/16 playing 32 games for Charlotte Rush in the USPHL tier 3 junior league.
He returned to the Wild for the 2014/15 season and will be returning for his 6th full league campaign this time around. Overall, Bez has played 191 games for Widnes, scoring 29+50 and picking up 236 penalty minutes.
Wild Player Coach Richard Haggar said of Hughes:
“Bez is a solid D who can also play forward if called upon. He will be playing his 6th season in total at Widnes which shows his dedication to the team. He is also a guy that you want not only on the ice but off the ice too. He brings so much to the group and I am happy he is sticking around for another year.”
Talking about his return to the Wild for another season, Bez said:
“It’s brilliant to be re-signing at Widnes, and I’m looking forward to the next challenge we face stepping into Division 1. Being able to play in the streaming series of games has been brilliant as it has allowed us all to get some sort of normality back and, obviously, it was great winning the playoff weekend. I want to thank all the lads who have helped us through both series of games, and wish them all the best in their future endeavours.”
