Match Report: Nottingham 5 – Widnes Ladies 5

The Widnes Ladies team picked up their first WPL point of the season with an exciting and highly entertaining 5-5 draw away to Nottingham Vipers on Sunday.

This was the best performance of the season so far with the Wild women outshooting their opponents by 46 to 33 and clearly demonstrates that the new look team – with a lot of new players since last season – is beginning to gel on the ice.

Nottingham took the lead after just 60 seconds of the game but Widnes equalised with a goal from Jennifer Hickey – her first for the club – on 7 minutes.

The Wild took the lead just 90 seconds later through Preston Gennoe and the score remained at 1-2 at the first period break.

This was a very closely contested game throughout with both teams having their chances but it was the Vipers who eventually made the next breakthrough with an equalising goal on 28 minutes.

They then went on to retake the lead with a short handed goal 4 minutes later.

Parity was restored on 34 minutes when Catherine Bowen Fell fired in a third goal for Widnes and the game remained on a knife-edge at 3-3 after two periods.

The Wild women visibly upped their game in the last period and peppered the Nottingham goal with shots. They were rewarded in the 44th minute when Bowen Fell scored her second goal of the game to edge Widnes back into the lead.

The advantage was extended to 3-5 with a second goal from Gennoe with just 3 minutes left in the game, and it began to look as if the Wild women were going to secure their first win at WPL level since they beat the Vipers back in December 2017.

But there was drama late on as Nottingham pulled a goal back with just 90 seconds left to play – and then levelled the scores once more 24 seconds later.

The clock ticked down and the game finished as a 5-5 draw with both teams taking a point, which sees the Wild women move off the bottom of the WPL table.

The Widnes Ladies will be hoping to build on this result when they take on the Vipers again next Sunday 21st November in their first home game of the season as Planet Ice Widnes – 4.15 pm face off.
