The YKK sponsored Widnes Wild lost 5-1 away to Moralee Division league leaders Solway Sharks in Dumfries on Saturday.
The game was pretty close in the first period as both teams sat back and tested each other out and it remained deadlocked until the hosts opened the scoring in the 17th minute to lead 1-0 at the first break.
Solway scored again in the 22nd minute and got a third just 90 seconds later. Then an incident in the 34th minute saw the Wild assessed a 2 minute bench penalty for too many men on the ice and Tom Stubley ejected from the match with a 5+game call for boarding.
This left the Wild facing a 5 on 3 powerplay for two minutes and then a 5 on 4 for the rest of Stubley’s 5 minutes and, after bravely holding out for 1m50sec, they eventually succumbed to a powerplay goal which gave the Sharks a 4-0 lead.
While the Wild didn’t look outclassed by any means, they left themselves too much to catch up on in the third period and Solway fired home again to make the score 5-0 5 minutes into the third period.
Widnes finally found the back of the net with a consolation strike from Lee Kemp with 5 minutes left on the clock.
