The YKK sponsored Widnes Wild moved up into second place in the Midlands Cup group table after a highly entertaining 6-4 win over the Sheffield Scimitars at Planet Ice Widnes on Sunday.
Widnes took the lead in the 7th minute with a goal from Jay Robinson and then doubled the advantage with a strike from player coach Richard Haggar just 35 seconds later.
The score remained 2-0 to Widnes at the first period break but Sheffield pulled a goal back just two minutes from the restart to keep themselves in contention. The game see-sawed somewhat at this point and could have gone either way
But three unanswered goals for Widnes – two from Kieran Beach and a short handed strike from Vlads Vulkanovs in between – put the Wild well and truly in the driving seat with a 5-1 second period lead.
A 6th goal from Liam Charnock just 84 seconds into the third period looked to have it sewn up for the Wild but Sheffield fought back with two quick goals to leave the score standing at 6-3 to Widnes with 15 minutes still to play.
A powerplay play goal for the Scimitars with just 80 seconds to go made for a nerve-wracking finish to the game but Widnes held on to secure a 6-4 victory.
The win means that Widnes are now second in the Midlands Cup group table at the half way stage of the “round robin” games. They are just one point behind group leaders Sheffield, who have played two games more and could go top if they beat Blackburn Hawks in their next game – which is this Sunday 17th October at Planet Ice Widnes, 5.30pm face off.
After the game, the Wild Player Of The Month award for September was presented to Vlads Vulkanovs. The winner was decided by the fans via an online Twitter poll.
The Mayor of Halton – Cllr Christopher Rowe – was a special guest at the match and was on hand to help unveil the winning design in the recent Kit Colouring Competition. The competition had been organised by Wild main sponsors YKK and the prize was to have the winning design made into a banner to be displayed at Wild home games. The winning design was submitted by James Walker.
