Sunday 1st May: Widnes Wild Ladies 0 – Bristol Huskies 20
The Widnes Wild Ladies team put in a plucky performance against the table topping Bristol Huskies in their Women’s Premier League game on Sunday at Planet Ice Widnes but ultimately slumped to a 0-20 defeat.
The new Huskies team have taken the league by storm this season, are undefeated in all 14 games they have played to date and only conceded 7 goals in the process so Sunday’s game was always going to be a bit of an uphill struggle for the Wild women.
As it turned out, Widnes started the game very well and gave as good as they got in the opening minutes. It took the recently crowned league champions until the 9th minute to breach the Wild defences and two further goals saw them leading at the first period break.
Despite the one sided scoreline, this was a very entertaining game to watch and the Wild players never let their heads drop once and kept battling right through to the final buzzer.
8 unanswered goals followed for the visitors in the second period and 9 more in the third but the Widnes netminding duo of Stephanie Drinkwater and Charlotte Jackson put in an heroic performance, stopping an incredible 79 shots out of the eye-watering 99 that they faced over the course of the game.
The Winifred Mabel Letts memorial MVP awards sponsored by Poet In Residence Lucy London went to Nora Egri for Bristol and Charlotte Cramp for Widnes, and were presented by match volunteer Thomas Horner.
The Widnes Wild Ladies team play their last home game of the season this Sunday 8th May when they take on Milton Keynes Falcons in the Women’s Premier League at Planet Ice Widnes – 4.15pm face off.
