The YKK sponsored Widnes Wild are pleased to announce that highly-rated forward Mikey Gilbert will be returning to the club for the forthcoming 2021/22 NIHL season.
This will be Gilbert’s fifth season with the Wild and he recently made his 100th appearance for the club during the Three Rivers Cup series.
He came up through the junior system at Altrincham and played NIHL games for the Manchester Minotaurs and Altrincham Aces for four seasons before moving westwards along the M56 in the summer of 2017.
In his four seasons to date at Widnes, Mikey has contributed 61 goals and 85 assists, picking up 131 penalty minutes. He was a member of the Wild teams that won three Laidler Play Off titles in a row in 2017,18 & 19, secured the Laidler Division league title in 2019 and also the recent NIHL North Cup and Division 1 National Championship.
Gilbert is also the Head Coach of the Wild Junior Academy and under his stewardship, the Widnes junior development system has grown steadily and now has teams competing at Under 9, Under 11, Under 13, Under 15 and Under 18 levels.
Talking about his return to the Wild team for the new season, Gilbert said:
“I am excited to be back at Widnes for this coming season and to be participating in the new venture for the Wild. I have played D1 hockey before and can’t wait to play it again with Widnes this time round, after the club has taken the step up.”
“The return to play and streaming series cups were great to play in and I loved being back on the ice but also playing at a higher standard of hockey than the Wild usually play at. It was great being back with the lads after the year we had all had – to get a little bit of normality back in life and to also play with some new faces.”
“It’s a shame to see Ollie go and I would like to wish him the best of luck for the future and maybe see him back on the ice at some point. Welcome on board to Hags – I’m sure he is going to do well. I was glad to be approached by him to rejoin the Wild once again and of course I agreed. I can’t wait to get back on the ice now!”
Commenting on Gilbert’s re-signing for the Wild, player coach Richard Haggar said:
“Mikey is a guy who brings a lot of experience to the team and has now played over 100 games for Widnes. His work ethic, dedication and skill speak for themselves in what he has done at Widnes. I am looking forward to seeing Mikey step up to D1 and showcase his talent at this level next season as well as continue the excellent work he is doing in the junior set-up to develop the potential future Widnes Wild players.”
Mikey will wear his number 16 shirt, and this will be available to own ‘n’ loan.
