The Wild Academy junior teams enjoyed mixed success against the Manchester Storm Juniors in the Planet Ice Cup on Sunday – with the Under 15 team winning 2-3 away in Altrincham and the Under 11s losing 1-9 at home at Planet Ice Widnes.
The U11s game was always going to a be a bit of tough test against the Storm team who had won the league with a 100% record last time around and the visitors took the lead after just 18 seconds of the game. The score was 0-3 at the end of the first period and 0-9 at the end of the second. The Storm outshot Widnes by 45 to 8 over the course of the game so Wild netminders Miks Kirstins and Kayton Kan – who swapped over halfway through – actually did a very good job in keeping the score down.
Widnes finally managed to score for themselves on 34 minutes with a goal from Ben Roberts. That was the only Wild goal of the game, though, and Manchester went on to score 5 more goals. However, due to a “mercy rule” that prevents young developing players being disillusioned by one-sided scorelines, this match gets recorded as a 1-9 win to the Storm.
Next weekend sees the U13 and U18 teams both take on the Storm juniors. The U15s are away and the U18s are at home at Planet Ice Widnes.
