The YKK sponsored Widnes Wild are pleased to announce the signing of exciting Latvian forward Vladislavs (Vlads) Vulkanovs for the forthcoming 2021/22 NIHL season.
Vulkanovs played a starring role with the Altrincham team that came third in the Laidler Division in the 2019/20 season where he finished as the Aces top scorer with 37 goals and 14 assists in 20 games – the highest number of goals in the division. He was also named Forward Of The Year for the Laidler Division for that season.
He learnt his hockey in his native Latvia and played for junior teams in Tukums, Ventna and Riga. Vulkanovs also spent time playing in the USA with the Boston Jr Bruins AAA U16 team.
Vlads played international hockey for Latvia at U17, U18 and U20 level and spent two seasons playing for HK Riga, which is the farm club for KHL side Dynamo Riga.
He is studying Civil Engineering at Manchester University and played for two years for the Manchester Metros University team before joining the Aces in 2019.
Talking about his move along the M56 to Widnes, Vulkanovs said:
“I am thankful for the opportunity that Widnes provided and look forward to this upcoming season. It’s exciting to compete and test myself against teams in D1. I am confident in my abilities to help the team to achieve the highest goals.”
Wild player coach Richard Haggar said of the Latvian:
“Vlad is the definition of a goal machine. He is a young energetic forward with an eye for goal anywhere on the ice and finished top goal scorer in D2 in his last season out. He was one who took the league by storm and is more than capable of making the jump to D1. I have no doubt he will become a Wild fan favourite once he gets up and running”
Vlad will wear the number 13 shirt and his home, away and warm-up shirts are available to own ‘n’ loan. More information can be found by following this link.
Another former Altrincham player to sign for the Wild for the new season is Joe Wyatt.
Wyatt is a former Sheffield junior who spent a long period away from the competitive game and was playing rec hockey in Manchester when he was spotted by the Aces.
He scored 9 goals and 13 assists in 20 games for them in the 2019/20 season.
Talking about signing for Widnes, Wyatt said:
“I am really looking forward to joining the Wild. An ambition of mine has always been to play in Division One so there are really exciting times ahead. I feel privileged to be part of the team.”
Richard Haggar said of Wyatt: –
“Joe is going to bring a different dimension to the team this season. He is a hard working player who will dig deep for the team week in week out.”
“He will allow us to change our style of play for different rinks and in different situations which will allow us flexibility in playing styles throughout the season.”
“I am happy he’s decided to join the Wild and cannot wait to get working with him.”
