Weekend Preview

The YKK sponsored Widnes Wild be looking to continue their recent winning run of three in a row with two games this weekend – away to league leaders Solway Sharks this Saturday 9th October and then at home to Sheffield Scimitars at Planet Ice Widnes on Sunday.

The only time that Widnes have played Solway in the past was in 2015/16 season when the teams met twice in the NIHL North Cup, with the Wild losing 2-8 at home and 5-1 away.

The Sharks have had a perfect start to the season, winning all 6 league and cup games that they have played so far and they sit top of the Moralee Division table and the NIHL North Cup group.

Following on from the trip north of the border on Saturday – which has a late face off time of 7pm – the Wild will be at home for the first time in a month to take on the Scimitars in the NIHL Midlands Cup.

They have already beaten the Sheffield team once this season – with a narrow 8-9 overtime win away in the cup a fortnight game – so the Steel City men will feel that they have a point to prove.

Sheffield currently top the Midlands Cup group table with 5 points from 3 games but a win for Widnes on Sunday would lift them into the mix for a place in the semi finals.

The Mayor of Halton will be a special guest at the game on Sunday and will be on hand to help main team sponsors YKK unveil the winning design of the recent kit colouring competition which has been made into a banner for display at Wild games.

The post match presentations will also see the welcome return of the Wild Player Of The Month award – who has been selected via an online poll by the fans.

After the game, the regular “meet the players” photo and autograph session will take place in the area by the café. The players taking part this week will be Ken Armstrong and Kieran Beach.

The home game on Sunday faces off at 5.30pm with doors opening at 4.45.
