Wild Brush Bulldogs Aside

BUL_5247Widnes Wild moved one step closer to securing 2nd place in the Laidler Conference on Sunday night as they comfortably beat Bradford Bulldogs 13-0. This leaves the Halton side requiring just one more point from three remaining games to finish just behind league champions Deeside Dragons.

Wild were without Kieran Strangeway and Sheldon Cassidy who are both recovering from long term injuries. Dave Swanston and Danny Bullock were also unavailable for selection whilst Greg Ruxton returned between the pipes with both Tom Mcdonald and Josh Benstead unable to dress.

Sundays game started quickly with both teams getting chances but it would be the Wild that would break through first. Scott Mckenzie scoring a first period hat-trick to give the home side a commanding 3-0 lead at the end of the first period.

Wild came out flying in the 2nd period and really wanted to punish their prey, scoring 6 unanswered goals to give them full control of the game. Goals came from Chris Gee, Geoff Wigglesworth and Scott Mckenzie (3) taking his tally to six on the evening. The period would end 9-0.

Four more goals courtesy of Tom Ratcliffe, captain Shaun Dippnall and Calum Ruddick (2) would round off the scoring at 13-0. A very comfortable night for the Widnes Wild and a happy coach Mckenzie had this to say about his team’s performance;

‘It’s always tough when you play against teams that are bottom of the league because you never know what you’re going to get when they turn up to play. Bradford have a lot of great kids that work extremely hard but unfortunately they were missing quite a few of them tonight. Still they never gave up and battled right to the end.’

‘I like how we went about our business tonight. As I have said before it is all about league points right now. We aren’t interested in the score-line, we just want to make sure of the 2 points every night and now we have put ourselves in a great position only needing one more point. The lads have really worked and they deserve to be where they are right now.’

The Widnes Wild return to league action this weekend as they travel to Coventry on Saturday and return home to the Hive on Sunday to face the Hull Jets. Face off time is at the usual 17:30 with doors opening at 16:45. Tickets are available to buy on the door or alternatively call box office on 0151 420 7930.
