The Widnes Wild return to home ice this Sunday evening at Silver Blades Widnes to host the Coventry Blaze NIHL. Last weekend saw the Wild gain another 2 valuable Laidler Conference points, thrashing local rivals Altrincham Aces to move into 2nd place in the league. Goals from Geoff Wigglesworth (4), Scott Mckenzie (3), Shaun Dippnall & Calum Ruddick securing a 9-1 scoreline on Sunday night. The previous evening the Wild travelled to Billingham to face Moralee Conference side Billingham Stars. Wild would go on to lose 7-3 but Coach Mckenzie had this to say about his teams efforts;
‘We travelled up to Billingham with 8 forwards, 5 D-men and an 18 year old goalie. I challenged the guys before the game to be more aggressive and really make them make plays to beat us, although we lost I think we used the game as a massive learning tool. The guys bought into what we trying to do and worked extremely hard. I was very proud of their efforts and it showed everyone that we can play with the teams in the league above us. We totally changed our dynamic and it has opened up the eyes of the players massively. So overall I am glad we agreed to join the Cup competition, the experience for the players is invaluable.’
Coventry Blaze travel to Widnes off the back of a 2-1 win at home to Hull Jets. A fantastic result for a team who has struggled to find form in the Laidler Conference this year. The Blaze have some very talented young players on their roster that pose a threat to the Wild defence. They will be coming to Widnes with nothing to lose and Wild captain Shaun Dippnall had this to say about the visit of Coventry Blaze;
‘Coventry have been struggling a little this year but they aren’t to be underestimated. They still have some good players and could surprise any team in the league. It should be an exciting game for the fans to watch and I am looking forward to Sunday evening.’
Sunday’s game will face off at the usual time of 17:30, Adults £6 & Children £3, doors open at 16:45.
