The RTL Widnes Wild open their NIHL Laidler Conference league campaign with a home game against Hull Jets at Silver Blades Widnes this Sunday, 4th September.

The Wild finished as runners up in the league last season – their highest ever position in their short 3 year history – and are hoping to improve on that performance this time around.

There have been a few changes at the club over the summer months with the arrival of a new player coach in the shape of Oliver Barron and the signing of several new players to complement the existing squad.

Barron’s new look Wild team picked up back to back wins in 2 pre-season challenge matches against north-west rivals Altrincham Aces last weekend and Barron was pleased with how his team plan is coming together.

He said: ”It was great to get on the ice for two competitive games vs the Aces. We have had a lot of new faces come into the team so pre-season games were the perfect opportunity to get some playing time together ahead of the season.

Altrincham provided a good test over the two games and, with the players they have coming back, I’m sure they will have a successful season. I felt we controlled both games for large periods of time creating good goal scoring opportunities. We should have converted more of the chances, but the games gave me a good insight as to where we are at.”

There are a few things we need to work on in this week’s practice in preparation for the season opener vs Hull Jets. It was great to see a large crowd supporting on Sunday, and I can’t wait to get the season started.“

The game against Hull on Sunday faces off at 5.30pm and doors open at 4.45pm. Admission is £6 for adults and £3 for children.
